Skills and Improvements

Journal Entry: Sat Sep 1, 2007, 4:42 PM
Earlier I was thinking about what "art skills" I wanted to work on. There's so much beautiful work on dA, and I hope that one day I can produce work at the same level. There's skills I know I need to develop: some more basic than others, some directly tied to certain techniques and tools. There's a whole hell of a lot of them, and Lord knows I will never become a master at any of them, but I'd like to try.

I'd like to (in no particular order):

improve my ability to define form and volume using color
improve my sense of composition
improve on my typographic skills
improve my 3D texturing and rendering skills
improve my ability to use texture in illustration
develop both a painterly and an anime-esque coloring style that I can execute in less than an eternity
be able to make realistic looking vector images
be able to make photorealistic photoshop images

"You expect to do all that?!" I hear you ask. Well, no I don't *expect* to. I just hope to some day. Two different things :)

PS-
On a totally random note, I'm sitting here watching "The Fountain" for the second time, and I'm feeling like I'm about to cry again. This movie gets to me. I've never seen anything in a film that's beautiful in the same way that this movie is beautiful when Xibalba explodes.

Very wise advice :). I assume you mean real paints, pastels, the messy, dirty stuff that can more easily have a life of its own?

In my humble opinion The Soul of Art transfers directly through the skin... The Computer is only as powerful as the plug into which it feeds...
I use it... yes
But to be quite honest about it... I prefer a wall to hang it from....

I am working on specific things. I started with eyes. Yes, only eyes and hair. I am still working those, now eye positions and hair movement. I al also studying hair... Backgrounds I studied a lot from Bob Ross.. yes he was one the best landscape artist in America. Get his tapes.... or go to his site.... I love Bob... I want to make my art more life like... and realistic.. I still have sooo much to work on! But I am doing that!

I used to draw eyes all the time, too . Still struggling with hair. Will always be struggling with hair *sigh*. I watched Bob Ross all the time growing up. He was my favorite artist when I was a little kid. I used to paint landscapes in his style. Mine were all very bad, but I was 8 years old so I guess that's forgivable . He gets a lot of flack at art school, and I can differientiate between him and say, Monet, but I still love him and think it was a terrible loss when he died. He gave so many people a great gift of visual expression that they would never have had otherwise. I miss him.

Me kidding? You must be kidding me! ;) You have some very lovely drawings in your gallery! I have neither the patience nor the skill with a fine pencil for such work :)
